The Stage Loves Live From Leicester Square

Live from Leicester Square
Published Monday 23 March 2009 at 10:30 by Paul Vale
There is an air of anticipation hanging over the Leicester Square Theatre at the moment. The central venue is effervescent with regular comedy and cabaret shows based either in its basement bar or in the comfortable surroundings of its main stage.
Friday nights are currently drawing audiences in to see the reigning Queen of Leicester Square, Miss Polly Rae continuing to make her mark on London’s burgeoning burlesque scene. Rae stretches her artistic muscles even further in this regular Friday night gig mixing a marvellous vocal quality with a sharp sense of humour. Her delivery of A Guy What Takes His Time and Perhaps Perhaps Perhaps would have been highlights to the show if it wasn’t for Jo King’s sharp, sassy choreography and the Hurly Burly Girly’s joie de vivre. A new caveman scene slyly burlesques Kubrick’s 2001 - A Space Odyssey as the team of girls bow and worship a stiletto while Rae’s Black Swan routine is a familiar pleasure.

Currently supporting Rae are tap-dancing juggler Stuart Pemberton and comedy musical duo Frisky and Mannish. While Pemberton casts a more traditional shadow over the evening, Frisky and Mannish are slap bang up to date comedy cabaret bringing the audience a selection of familiar tunes given extremely unusual treatments. Genial host Paul L Martin keeps the proceeding moving along swiftly and it is good to see the house allowing the various staff to show off their other talents, with the barman creating a classical violin prologue to the night’s cabaret.
